Looking After Cycle Shops (support The Sport!)
darrenhopper replied to skuzzbucket's topic in Beginners Trials Chat
I'm working for my LBS & even when I need parts there's a ridiculous lead time & more grief than it's worth! The boss man suggested that I order online & have parts delivered to the shop. That way I can wander in do the work on my bikey & bugger off riding again without annoying his head about parts we just can't readily get. -
Who Lisens To Music While Riding?
darrenhopper replied to Tylerlovesalex's topic in Beginners Trials Chat
I'm usually listening to Rage Against The Machine or anything with a funky beat. Also like a band called Boy Hits Car - Strangely Apt! Music is the finest way to make sure I don't overthink on a solo ride! -
Why did little Suzie fall off the Swing? Because she had no arms. Why did little Johnny have no friends? Because he had lukemia Why did the monkey fall out of the tree? Because he was dead. Why did the other monkey fall out of the tree? Because he was holding onto the first one. Why did the third monkey fall out? He hadn't been paying attention & thought it was a game. What's the difference between a truck load of dead babies & a truck load of bowling balls? You can't unload bowling balls with a pitchfork!

We've got it from three sides in Galway... Public, Private Security Scum & The - Ever Lovely - Policia. First, the public at large... We get the usual "You're going to ruin that wall!" from alot of the grumpier old gits. But then again we get alot more people just standing about quietly having a look. And the un-inteligable squalk of a scumbag roaring something like "Show us a skill!"... At least I hope that's what they were shouting. Private security..... The roughest & least reasonable people I've ever met! They're usually found in the Uni (best riding spot in town). Enough said. And the Policia, they're mostly a bit of fun. We've had the bike coppers stop for a session on a wee wall. We've had the most hysterical lady cop in the world - She had to be sat down & calmed by her partner! The old lads just don't see us at all. And we've got the trainees, you know the ones... really have something to proove. They'll threaten you with everything short of a rubber glove!

That's a pretty nasty crack man, How bent out of shape is the rest of the frame? If the whole thing is as bandy as it looks in the photo I wouldn't hold up much hope for it surviving more than a month once re-welded. Most trials frames suffer from micro-fractures at high-stress points & I reckon if you do re-weld the head tube area & plate it, all it will do is shift the stress point further down the tube. If it doesn't try to snap between the two plates. I had my old frame (Saracen) re-welded a few times & all it really did was move the cracks further down the frame. As for price, if you can manage to get chatting with the guy doing the work it can work out alot cheaper... Especially if he shows an interest.

Hope Mono Trial 160mm Or Formula Oro K24 180mm
darrenhopper replied to laurent's topic in Beginners Trials Chat
Personally, I'm not a fan of anything Formula make. I rode one for a bit & couldn't stick it. Have a few mates who ride them & every time I work on their bikes the brakes are the biggest problem. Hope all the way! Great brake, great aftersales, fantastically easy to service & get spares for. -
Dude if you're looking for aesthetic ideas just pick a colour & buy quality parts till the bike looks ace!

Have you got all of the bits you intend to put together? Assemble them finger-tight & see how they fit

Well to start with there are more than one set of RF Evolve cranks. I wouldn't even entertain the idea of using an XC crank on a trials bike, it just wouldn't last! The DH model on the other hand as fitted to my freeride rig with x-type BB is really very strong & stiff. the bearings won't quit either. I still wouldn't be mad gone on the idea of landing a crank on the edge of a wall though. I ride Middleburns on my trials bike & have had no cause for concern with them yet. I fitted them along with a new ISIS BB & after checking them once or twice have zero worries about damaging them or them working loose or anything like that. Price difference is negligable too if you count in the fact that the Race Face will require a trials style Bash & small sprocket buying on top of the crank (& BB if ISIS).

There's no argueing with a well set up vee IMO. But to really kill any squidgy-ness try running them through a BMX linear outer casing with a squirt of medium weight oil through it. edit: Use full length outer! No dirt gets in & you can use your hose guides,

It's a Fresh Products Proto..... & I thinks it's the Dogs Danglies!

I'm not entirely sure what you mean but if it's that your axle bolt is rounded & has gotten your crank stuck on your BB... Then do as follows: Pop out the plastic cap from around the rounded bolt. Find an angle grinder with the smallest possible disc. Cut a groove in the head of the bolt... careful not to cut the crank. Wedge a large strong flat-bladed screwdriver into your shiny new groove. Twist or otherwise batter the bolt round till it's loose enough to grip in a pliers. It might also work to clamp the screwdriver in a bench vice &, holding the frame, try to use the length of the frame as a lever against the stuck bolt. For this one you'll have to wedge the lower pedal against the vice or it'll just spin round. Have Fun!

I'd try degreasing the rim as said above & maybe give it a fresh grind if you run a ground front. I'd also rough up the old pads with a file, make sure they're completely flat & meet the rim squarely. Make sure the brake is set up correctly... Booster & securing legs in their correct positions. If none of this works give it a fresh bleed & at that point you will have tried everything short of a full brake rebuild, seals hoses & all.

The two sizes refer to the length of the wheelbase of the finished bike (depending on your choice of fork). Which one you choose will largly depend on what you're comfortable with. I find riding a mates long frame a bit of a stretch, but then I've always ridden relatively compact bikes. What sort bike are you moving from? Could you find somewhere you could give them both a bash?

Casting my vote for the Revolver SS. Been through more than my fair share of Hope hubs including more than a few XCs 2 Bulbs & a Big Un I found in the shed from my old DH bike. But then I saw the light & kept it all as cheap as possible....... DMR hub & ACS freewheel....... Not a failure yet. I think it's outlasted pretty much every wheel I've had ahead of it!

Anything from the Rage Against The Machine back catalogue!! Or when a spot of showboating takes my fancy!

Saracen Mad 2 Six Hydraulic Or Onza T-rex?
darrenhopper replied to GooseTrials's topic in Beginners Trials Chat
I've ridden my 2six now for about 8 or 9 months. Just changed to a t-Rex. The 2six is a smashing bike, it's a good length for most kinds of riding & the components hold up better than the frame. I broke mine just behind the BB on the drive side. I reckon there's a bit too much flex in the frame if you ride heavy on the pedals. Also, under heavy braking the seat stays flex like hell. Only been on the Rex for a couple of days now but it certainly feels stiffer & the over-built rear end gets rid of alot of the flex caused by the brakes. If you can manage it, I'd recommend a couple of hours on each to get the measure of them & decide on what feels best. -
I'm running a High Roller on the rear, usually between 25 & 30 psi... (depending on which crappy garage pump I use on it). Fantastic grip in all conditions! Also running a lightweight Panaracer XC tyre on the front. not really sure it makes all that much difference but I like to think it does
-
Cheers man, It's the old old Rex frame with the monster big seat tube poking out at you. If it proves tough enough to find a fix I reckon I'm going to give it the chop & weld a plate over the hole. Appreciate the suggestion though.

Hi-you mate, With your drive side crank off the bike, screw on, by hand, the fixed cog. You won't need to use a chain whip because the cog tightens in the same direction as you pedal... All that means is that the cog will be good & tight after the first time you stamp on the pedals (bike fully assembled... cranks tight... wheel in place & chain fitted). If you're using a bash ring be sure to put that on first. Hope this helps. Man it's crappy when someone beats you to it!
-
Cheers mate, very very helpful. I'm sure you know how much fun it can be trying to find parts at a decent price & beurocratic exclusions from the more useful parts of the forum just add to the experience!

It's allin the topic really. I need some 4-botl mounts & a booster.... preferably 4-bolt as well. Are there any mounts available to offste the brakes towards the rim? (Rim a shade narrow for the frame) Ooo, I also need a seat for an '04 T-rex. I'd like one of those little plastic crash pads... Can I get one ofthose for my frame?

Hi-you doing gang, I've been riding trials now for a shade over 7 months. I started out on a Saracen 2-six that I nabbed from a mate for 50 quid (he couldn't ride it). (Well neither could I to be honest). I've swapped off the brakes for Maguras & the cranks for a set of Middleburns. Latest problem is the Frame... Managed to break the drive side chainstay twice within an inch of the BB. So time for a change I suppose. The geometries suit me better than anything else I've ridden, which isn't alot in the way of trials specific bikes... There are no riders anywhere near me. I have ridden every imaginable jump frame & DH / Freeride rig to destruction though. I'm looking for advice on which frame to go for. I've got my little heart set on something with heavily machined yokes around the BB & chain stays. A stiffer set up around the rear brake wouldn't hurt either. I'm also intrested to hear opinions on how people have managed on higher BB frames? I'm not quite able to hop up to a back wheel landing comfortably yet. Any help will be much appreciated.
