Yeah hitting it might just be making the split top race tighten up and basically make it like hitting a solid sheet of metal (not doing anything) because of the way it wedges down, so try to pry the top cap (logo bit, should have one) off with a flat screwdriver carefully, then getting that off. And underneath you should see the split race and try to pry that up and out but becareful not to warp it. Et viola, easy to slide out forks.
