A Crazy Idea

Right,

I have a 'cuda ghetto set-up for dirt. The bike is gradually falling apart and in the last week i've sold or swapped all the good parts.

My idea - i've been thinking for a long time of doing this - is to mount an engine on it.

Purely for fun and as a little project to keep me busy.

What I want to know is the best engine to use. Another forum suggested strimmer engine - the only problem is i'd need a rolling start or it wouldn't pull away.

So, hit me with ideas - realistic ideas.

I have a steel fabricators ready to do the welding too :)

Not looking to go super fast either, just a lil petrol motor to cruise along with :D

How fast you looking on going?

I would think about a honda vision engine, There smallish, go about 30 mph? Hehe :P

The honda idea is good, but under a certain CC you don't need reg & license etc...

Whats the easiest way to make the engine interact with the rear wheel? someone said a roller on top of the wheel but then you'd stop quick once you stopped accelarating.

Anyone know of any similar projects?

Anything with a engine you are not allowed to have on the road. Unless it is taxed, mot'ed, and your insured. Well when we and my mate were considering doing a similur thing to our go kart, but with a chain, weld a sprocket onto a axle. Then have a chain run from the engine, to your sprocket.

sounds a great idea and looks so much fun, but im sure will be a little harder to do than it looks, especially if your limited with your tools and parts. good look mate. best idea looks like to either run a chain and sproket or have it directly on to the hub.

Get a 200cc 8hp honda engine, fit a clutch, cog, chain and accelerator and heypresto offf you go at like 50mph wahoo. Would cost about 270 for all that gear new by the way. :D. Or if you have little or no money then get yourself down to a machinery auction and pick up a banger old lawnmower for like a tenner and beast your bike up (Y)

did this about 5 years ago, just got it out of the shed for you :P

basically i welded a sprocket to the sturmy rear hub (steel shell you see) and made some mounts for the engine on the rear rack :) it had a centrifugal clutch which was handy :P

anyway, quick few pedals and whack the engine on and away you went...well kinda :$

dunno if thats of any help to you, but it was alot of fun to make :) and dont ask about the paint tin bolted to the back, i dont have a clue either :ermm: think thats where the fuel tank was mounted on top of in the end :)

If your going to build upon a bicycle, your going to want a small sized engine, no more than 80cc. If you search for a moto trials make called scorpa, they made a motorbike kitted out with try-all bits and bobbies. Very smart and not really heavy.

You have to take into fact that it isn't just the engine, there is also the carb, air filter and lots of hose. So your most probably going to have to modify the frame to fit the engine in.

Me and my dad have built up 2 trials motorbike one of which has taken a year and a bit to sort out completely and the other just under 6 months. We are building a 100cc mx play bike, and we're thinking about doing what your thinking of.

use a mini moto engine there easy to maintain and should give you enough power to start off pretty easy to ride aswell with no gears to worry about although unless you get a decent gear ratio on the the go it'll go no where also it will be quite loud and you'll have to pull start it then mount the bike

or another option would be a lawnmowor engine but the drive is complicated a decent 125 4 stroke engine would be ideal and pretty quick to but you need to mount a clutch or get a decent gear box from a sit on mower

Get a goped-sport engine or a bigfoot engine...There fast for what they are(22.cc) and you can mod them and also have clutche's.They dont use chain's,insted they use a thing called a spindle...One of these:

The engines shouldnt cost much for a decent one...But go on this site for more info http://www.psukracing.com/index.php?cPath=126

I might aswell show you my bigfoot's engine:

With a little modifaction's..Ive seen those engine's beat 110cc pit bike's and catch up with bmw's.

And yeah they are only 22.cc and sound like a 2 stroke 125cc with a racing exhaust on. :turned:^_^

They also arnt no cheap crap either what break's down so easily.

how about a lawnmower engine mounted sideways and stick an axle coming out where the blade would normally go and weld a sprocket on there(on the non drive side, run a chain down to the bb shell get an old bb and weld a sprocket on each side (16 tooth would be about right) on the drive side put a chain on it going to the back wheel which you would either weld up the freewheel or stuick a fixed hub on it. then weld some foot pegs to the chainstays and put some mesh over the moving parts. :) just my crazy idea :D

EDIT:

http://www.peltzer.net/ebike/

That looks cool, but very hard to do.

might i add, make sure you put your forks on the right way in the excitement. that guy didnt :)

some of you really arent thinking this through.....its a bike frame, mounting a bloody 125/lawnmower engine just isnt realistic without some serious modifications

mike, i remember once at nass, seeing a kid who has basically got a 50cc moped/scooter, like a vision or something, and hacked off the front, then welded on a mountainbike front end-looked pretty rad with bombers and a front disc :) maybe try that? wont take bugger all time and will be damn fun to ride :) cheap as nuts toooooooo (Y)
