ned1
hi all, i have stripped the magura bolts in my t-pro frame....i cant get anyone to heli coil it and so i have an idea.Would it be ok to just drill rite through the frame and stick a bolt on the other side, its for my brther and he isnt heavy at all or would the frame just tear or something like that?thanks alotchris
anzo
The force on the magure would probably, eventually, force the bolt making the hole to get bigger; thus making the frame VERY weak.If you bought it new, contact the shop about getting a new one on warrenty, OR, purchase a helicoil kit and do it yourself, its very easy and cheap...or give it to an engineers shop to sort it out for you. Rab
It would work for a while but eventually it would fail. The mounts have more metal in them so they can cope well with the force from the brake. The tubing on the other hand is alot thinner so would not have the strength you'd need.It might be worth taking it to a local engineer/metal worker type person and ask them if they could do anything for you. The worst they can do is say no after all
Monkey
drilling right through would shag it up (technical term )you could drill it and tap it for the next size up (M6?) as a last resort. To the same depth as previously. But you might need to file the holes a little.EDIT: Duh, I should have said file the holes in the magura mounts, as someone else pointed out. Joey B
I have done exactly the same to my T-Pro. Heli-coiled them 1 size up and the threads are fine. The only;y problem with this is the bolts didn't fit through the mounts so i used a round file and a bit of elbow grease and filed the 4-Bolt mount holes so that they fit the bolts. Mark W
Probably would've been easier and better in the long term to helicoil them to the same size.If you scope it out on eBay/Google, you could find a helicoil kit you could use yourself? I haven't done it myself before, but from everyone I've spoken to about it it's not too hard to do, and would be better than tapping it out to M6. Expect to pay £20-30 for the kit though. python_man
get an engineering firm to fill the thread space up then re tap the thread in again with the same size thread. you then wont have to change the size of your bolts but you will have new thread.you also could buy some copper inserts they are just cylinders with thread inside them . you could then get an engineering firm to ally weld them into your frame you will not strip the copper inserts easilyhope i helped
