Paul
IMO grinds are not worth it: a.) wear pads away quicker b.) weaken rim sidewalls c.) look bad The solution? Use a bit of tar :D :- Edited October 24, 2003 by KrazyKID
Janson
IMO grinds are not worth it: a.) wear pads away quicker b.) weaken rim sidewalls c.) look bad The solution? Use a bit of tar :D :- Sorry, but lol. Let's start with the pros and cons with tar: Pros: Cheap, good lockage, easy to apply and get Cons: Modulation=nothing, can make the pads stick=bad, also can rip pads off the backing, doesnt work in the wet (slightest moist and its ruined. And pros and cons with grind: Pros: pretty straightforward, lasts for months, works amazingly well in the wet, looks kinda funky, nothing to put on the rims all the time, pretty OK modulation (light grind), and great lockage. Also, mine's pretty silent. Cons: Might ruin your rim, weakens the sidewalls, need technique and an angle grinder (or file or hacksaw). Go grind! Dan Clark
so exactly how do you grind? Any tips on doing it well, what way to hold the grinder etc? This has got to be the most useless FAQ topic so far

LTC_Dave
grinds are cool just a pitty they munch pads if they are a harsh enuff grind to work!!! (oh, and dont do too many brake-dragging manuals!! :-)
dave33
if u put the wheel in a clamp and spinit then holf the grinder at a small angle thats good if u just touch the grinder on then it should spin the wheel this will mean u get an even grind and no huge lumps out of the rim
LTC_Dave
if u put the wheel in a clamp and spinit then holf the grinder at a small angle thats good if u just touch the grinder on then it should spin the wheel this will mean u get an even grind and no huge lumps out of the rim aye, definitely cool for a light grind, but for heavier grinds I'd recommend the good old 'kneel on it and grind the fook out of it' approach
Tartridge
'kneel on it and grind the fook out of it' approach :- Much better!

Janson
Was that your KOXX rim Ad? How's the grind working out? Martin t hasn't got a ground rim at all. Well, he's got my old BMF at his house, and that rim is ground :-
Tartridge
Was that your KOXX rim Ad? How's the grind working out? Its one of the generic cheese rims (Full Fat). Its good so far, not tried it in the wet yet though.
Paul
How much do you think pads will last you on that ? :-
Tartridge
How much do you think pads will last you on that ? :- Well after about 4/5 decent rides, my Koxx pads have worn about... zero (defo less than 0.5mm) So, quite a while id say (seeing as theyre 10mm thick!) :D
Tom_C
JUst learn to not drag the brake for manuals, everwise youll never get over bout 30 metres on the flat! If its a light grind ( like mine) and you dont drag the brake unnecesarily then your pads last ages and you can ride in the wet: only advantage of a grind. mods
How long would it take to do a grind with a file?
Tartridge
Id say an infinite amount of time. Seeing as you'd be using a file instead of a grinder, you'd end up with a 'file' rather than a 'grind'? Just buy an angle grinder... can get them from £13!
