How To Mount A Disc On A Ck Bmx Iso Hub On A Mod

Hey

I dunno if there is much of a call for this, but I thought i'd post it up anyway.

Background

I've recently bought a Megamo frame, which was so I could go dual disc. I've had a few unrelated problems building it up, but the biggest worry for me was the disc mount, because I had a Chris King hubshell, so I'll show you how I mounted mine.

I started with a CK BMX hub, which I had to buy an ISO hubshell for. I emailed AspireVeloTech about the price of a hubshell. They told me it was $85 plus shipping to the UK.

I ordered one and within 5 days (including a weekend) it was here. I then sent it to TartyBikes along with my old hub and Adam serviced and swapped out the internals for me for £10 + postage.

I then got down to the task of building my wheel, which was a hard task for me as it was my first wheel, but it seems to be holding up okay, touch wood.

Tools/Parts List

Chris King BMX ISO Hub - £369.00 from TartyBikes + $85 for the hubshell from AspireVeloTech.

Hope Mono Trial Rear Disc Brake - £135 from TartyBikes. I picked mine up for £50 from the classifieds on here, complete with 2x 160mm Monty rotors.

Hope Mono Trial Disc Rotor - Included with the brake.

6x M5x10mm Disc Rotor Bolts - Included with the brake.

2x M6x15mm Disc Caliper Bolts - Included with the brake.

4mm Allen Key

5mm Allen Key

8mm Allen Key

M10 Washers - From my garage. I found 1mm thick was good for me.

Hope Disc Shims - £1.99 from ChainReactionCycles. I found a 1mm and 5 .25mm worked well for me, which means you will need one pack of .25mm spacers.

The build

I mounted the disc on the Chris King BMX ISO Hub with the 6 M5x10mm Disc Rotor bolts, and tightened them up with the 4mm Allen Key.

At first I thought it was easier to a snail cam on the outisde on the non drive side dropout, and a thick, 3mm washer on the inside of the dropout. Through time I realise this was stupid, so I'm now running it like this.

(Excuse the shitty photo, my camera wouldnt focus properly)

As you can see, I have the snailcam on the inside, but I also have a small 1mm washer on the FAR SIDE of the snail cam, this is so the snail cam engages into the bolts properly, but the washer helps space the hub out slightly.

If you zoom in you should be able to see a small washer next to the snail cam, but before the hub axle

On the drive side the snail cam is still on the inside as usual.

When it came to mounting the brake that was simple, using the M6x15mm bolts and a 5mm Allen Key I had it on within seconds. I was running a +40 adaptor at first but have now decided to go back to a 160mm rotor for convenience sake for when I change frames.

As soon as I tightened all the bolts, I found the rotor was rubbing. This was expected as I didn't think it would be as simple as screwing it straight on and hoping it would work. Thanks to Adam Griffin, I had some Hope Disc Shims which I then used to space it out sligtly.

I've got .75mm worth of spacers on the front mount, and 1.5mm worth of spacers on the rear mount. I'm sure if my mount was faced properly I wouldn't have many problems at all.

I found the best way to get it setup properly was to put the wheel in the dropouts and tension the chain properly, then tighten that side up with the 8mm Allen Key as tight as I could, I then moved the non driveside snailcam until it engaged with the bolt, and tightened it up. This meant my snail cams were in different places, but it still runs okay so I don't mind too much.

Conclusion

So there you go, basically I would say that it was worth doing if you're thinking about going DD. I haven't ridden much but so far I am really enjoying it, I cant wait for it to bed in properly as i'm sure it will be awesome, all in all the build didn't cost me that much, as I got fairly lucky with the disc brake, but you're still looking at under £125 if you look in the right place and already have the CK hub.

The rear end of my bike

As you can see in that final photo, both the snail cams are on the inside. I know they're set to different notches, but that's explained earlier in the post.

I hope this post has been informative to some, sorry if it should be in the FAQ but I thought here it may be a bit more useful as people rarely look in the FAQ from what I've found.

If anyone has any questions or comments, I'll get back to them ASAP.

Cheers,

Jon

Nice one mate :) look the absolute nuts!

I was just wondering, what size is that rear rotor as it seems a little small for the caliper? as youve still got room with pads, or is that something to do with the mounting?

It's a 160, in reality I could do with something along the lines of a 165, but I'm happy with it as it is. It's more than likely something to do with the disc mount, rather than the rotor or hub.

it cost a lot

how does it ride?

I already had the hub, the brake cost me £50, which I then swapped with Muel and he sent me £20 so it ended up costing me £30, the frame and forks were £70, the hubshell was £45 and the service was a tenner, so all in all it cost me £155 for the entire setup, pretty cheap I reckon.

As I said, "I haven't ridden much but so far I am really enjoying it, I cant wait for it to bed in properly as i'm sure it will be awesome."

Nice topic Jon, I hope you enjoy riding DD.

Hows are the helicoils holding up? Fine I imagine, or you would have told me. :P

Maybe you should put it in the wiki as well? I don't know how it works, as the people who have edited my past topics have probably worked out.

Maybe you should put it in the wiki as well?

not being funny but why?

its not really a new thing, people have been running disc kings for a few years, although rare, its pretty much a modification free set up.

does look nice though, i had 205 avids on one of my old megamo's then opted for 160 hope trial's
