Instructional Video: Grinding Rims

Krisboats

Recommended Posts

Okay, made a bit of a video on how to grind rims, first one so don't know how good you'll all find it. I tried to cover everything i can think of, but i'm sure i'll have fogotten some things.... just seems to help me do things if i see someone esle doing it first so i thought i'd try and help.

Anyway, here it is... needs to be split into two parts for youtube as its over 10 minutes long. Forum doesn't have an embedding option for it either so sorry, its a direct link.

Very helpful vid that, my cutting disc is thick so im guna buy some thinner ones now and see if it comes out any sharper (Y) Maybe mensioning wearing goggles and a dust mask would of been a good idea though.

Ha ha, to be fair... that was the most savage grind i've ever done. I got it so deep/sharp that my rock pad blues were reduced from near new to about 1-2mm in a little 30 minute play on the curb on the front garden.

And despite what it looks like, my hand was under the other side of the rim... just the camera angle makes it look bad. I did point out that you should be careful though ;)

Shorts are mans shorts not gay ones.

It was doen after lunch... now i wake up at 11.00'ish, have lunch at one... so i guess it was filmed around 2.00 in the afternoon :P.

I tried to cram the time down to fit it onto youtube, and as a result the list of safety gear was removed and replaced with "you should always wear saftey gear when using a power tool such as this one" or something to that effect.

Might make a few more of these, have a thrashed bliptv maintenance channel or something.

Tommorrows task, bleeding brakes :D

Anybody got any others they want doing?

Lets see what angle you set your levers at then?

Yeah, cleaning a Pro2 out and all that shizz! (Y)

...oh and getting a sodding dug in sprocket off a freehub body!;)

For bleeding, my lever gets put in its upmost position to lower the chances of air getting trapped in the system. Which for maguras and RB's its horizontal, so the lever is parallel to the floor. For riding my lever is generally at a horizontal position when the bike is in the back wheel position, which makes it about 45 degrees to the floor when bike is level. A good personal guide is to undo the levers and jump on the bike, get it on the back wheel and the levers will shift into your natural position. Simply jump off the bike and tighten them where they are.

Thats easy, undo the lockring, slide off any spacers. Wrap a cloth around the exposed freehub body, clamp with mole grips. Use rubber/plastc/metal hammer and hit it anti clockwise. To make it easier to get the cog on and off again in future using sandpaper to wear the notches left on the freehub will do wonders.

Cheers Kris, yeah I meant for bleeding. I read somewhere you should have the levers pointing straight up for bleeding... gave me trouble for months till I realized it should be horizontal! >_<

I made this a while back to help get a grip on the freehub body (chunky sprocket!), and chainwhip the stuck sprocket off. Its not an ideal method though, I'll try the mole grip way!

:o That cog looks like it has a massive base on it... how the hell did that dig in?

Nah` I use that to get a grip on the top off the freehub body and use a chainwhip to `try` and get the dug in sprocket off... that make sense?

....actually, that's exacly what I wrote before. H`mmm mole grip sounds easier!

  • 1 month later...

There's this from the wikipedia page here. Whilst its not the grind i did in that video it is the kind of grind i usually go for. I held the grinder at about 40 degrees and only slightly leaned in with my shoulder whilst grinding. It was enough to give a nice sharp bite without wearing the pads quickly. The grind also lasted through some joypads (shown in picture) and a set of second hand plazzies.

Metal cutting disk instructions:

Let the air out of your tyre, lean the bike on the ground, tread on an area of the tyre to prevent it from catching on the grinder (watch your feet).

Then go round the rim in a clockwise direction whilst holding the grinder at around 80-90 degrees, do this in short bursts of about 5-6 inches at a time, try not to go over the same area twice, when going over these 5-6 inches, do them quickly for maximum roughness.

the outcome will be:

This will be a nice sharp grind and should last a fair while. This method is prefered as the grind tends to last longer.(This works for both metal and stone discs).

I dont have access to a grinder, so would a course type file do as an alternative? On the issue of grinding, wouldnt VERTICAL Grind lines make better contact for brake pads than HORIZONTAL Grind lines? because there is greater stopping resistance...like the pic above i just noticed.
