just looking/planning(day dreaming) at building a bike 26" from new parts and came across the the zoo and gu fixed hubs, what are the advantages/disadvantages to running these. i under stand it means running a free wheel on the cranks. or would it be best to stick to the way i remember with the hub having the free end??? any help would be great thanks.

well having a front freewheel means that you only have to replace the freewheel if it breaks.

i'd only get a fixed hub though if you need 116mm drop outs (on modstocks and mods)

otherwise id stay with a 'normal' hub. they just seem to be more reliable.

If you are going to get a 26" with regular 135mm dropouts, I would recommend a Hope Pro2 or XC. Even a Hope Mono will do the job. I have heard that the Deng (Echo, ZOO!, Adamant etc.) freehubs have a tendancy to break. Hope are a brilliant brand with excellent customer service. You should have no problem with a Hope hub.

The advantage of having a front freewheel is just like Grant H said, you only have to replace the freewheel if it breaks. No need for a new hub and wheel build. But with a Mod stock (stock frame with Mod 116m hub spacing) a front freewheel and fixed rear hub is the way forward. Mod stocks are just Mods with bigger wheels!!

Hope this helped

I can't believe it that no one has mensioned the annoying fact that freewheels slow you down quite a bit due to the friction between the teeth and the pawls. This problem effects try all's the most as they have 108 points of engagement.

BULLSHIT

ever rode a pro2? its very loud because of the spring tension but doesnt slow you down significantly.

chris kings have 72 engagements and dont slow you down a noticable ammount.

haha is anyone really going to choose either because one slows you down :S thats like saying bought a cheap freehwheel so i can ride faster :S

I would recomend a freehub profile/king/hope i wouldnt go for the deng because like its been said i have head they are weak

Surely any freewheel/freehub will slow you down a little bit because each ball-bearing has to slide over each pawl and it will create friction which is a force that acts against forward movement.

However, I dont see how freewheels/freehubs slowing us down that tiny little bit is going to make a difference as trials is not exactly about speed!

Having a freewheel on the front:

Advantages:

Easy to fix, and if it's totaly raped up don't have to unbuild (and then ultimatly re-build) a wheel to replace it.

Wight is more contral on the bike.

Dissadvantages:

More expensive (Rear cassette hub + fixed cog < ENO + Fixed rear hub)

Freewheeling devices on the front tend to be not last as long becuase the force is reduced through the gearing.

You get less effecive engagement becuase freewheels are on the cranks, where as freehubs have increased effective due to the gearing.

The chain still moves when your 'freehweeling'.

Freehweel tend to have a slight drag, also the chain moving creates drag too.

freewheels not freehubs!

What he said! Also you shouldn't be swearing on the forum, I hope you get warned for it.

I'd swear it doesn't say that in the forum guidelines.

It just emphasises his wrongly made point.

also, you shouldnt be able to tell people to talk any differently from how they would in real life.

not true, no setup, with trials gearing will beat a tryalll-108 ep freewheel, only a king being run on 18-12 can get similar engagements (18/12 = 1.5 72x1.5=108) unless i missenterpareted what you put. ffw *** :)

theres going to be just as much friction in a chris king than any other freewheel so saying they slow you down is stupid.

Have you considered that the chain spins with a freewheel creating friction? Also don't call me stupid, if your going to constantly insult people your going to get banned.

A CK hub is designed for all sorts of cycling sports, where having a friction free hub may be important. An ENO for example is disigned for trials, and they sacrificed 'good roll' for strength and sealed bearings.

And they chain constanly moving creates drag too.

Yeah i didn't quite explain that right, i mean if you have a profile say, which is 48ep, it ends up feeling like 72ep. Which is the same as an eno.

But yeah your right, but if you went front freewheel just to run a try-all freewheel just to get 108 ep. You need a slap. :P

Have a quick search for 'gear ratio' there has been a few threads with polls and such seing which gear ratios are the fave amongst stock riders. (Y)

Personally, I use 18 up front and 16 at the back (on stock).

I found that 18-15 felt a little bit too sluggish for gapping, but it was a bit better for back wheeling things.

Its all down to personal preference, but around the 18-15 mark is always a good start.
