Jason
Everytime I pedal down the cranks/bb gives a clicking noise. I'm running some echo cranks (6061 forged) on a shimano? bb (square tapered [FFW]) on my t-pro.Any idea what this is/how to fix it?PS: this is a different noise to the creaking noise... I've had that before Edited May 24, 2006 by Jason
Lee Cable
I have the same problem, would be nice for a answer!
Mark W
It probably means you need to grease + tighten your BB, or grease your crank tapers The clicking is just metal-on-metal movement, so if you grease it all up it'll STFU
ramps
Just give everything a good grease and tighten up, if it persists, a new bb may be on the cards.
joker
hmm correct me if im wrong, but isnt it grease for isis, and clean with no grease for tapered........best bet is to take the bb out, clean the threads and re grease, re tighten to the write torque and then clean crank tapers and bb and fit back on.If it still creaks, unlucky, could be the bb or cranks or even a dry weld on the frame. if your sure theres no cracks... I'd say there was more trouble with creaking with no grease on square tapered, 'cos there's mre movement in the cranks? Either way, it's not a bad thing to use grease, and it certainly quietens things down.Just a quickie - are the two people with problems running ACS Claws? Lee Cable
I dont run a ACS claw...or a ffw for that matter
Mark W
Does it click when you spin the cranks by the crank arm themselves, or does it only do it when you spin it by the pedals?
Lee Cable
Does it click when you spin the cranks by the crank arm themselves, or does it only do it when you spin it by the pedals? Its only when i put pressure on the arms, E.g. peddling, I know it isnt my pedals as it done the same with my old ones! Mark W
Well, just try tightening your cranks a touch then, or just strip 'n' grease basically. Like I said, the clicking is metal-on-metal rubbing, which'll be caused by something being fractionally loose, usually...
anzo
Could be bad chain alignment?
Jason
Took off, cleaned, regreased everything; except the freewheel and now it seems the freewheel is rubbing against the bb, making it near impossible to turn the cranks and I've checked the chain tension (it's not that making it stiff to turn), but it just really hard to turn. I took the right crank off... and everything ran smooth, so its not a case of the bb not turning. The freehweel and the bb are both done up nice and tight as well..... (not too tight).I'll have a look at the alignement, cheers for the help so far lads Edited May 25, 2006 by Jason

Welcome to the fun world of square taper Mine did exactly the same so I could only use a Dicta on my cranks for a year and a half. How much fun d'you reckon that was? When you said you didn't do the BB up too tight, how do you mean? You can never really over-tighten a BB unless you strip the threads on the frame or something, and them being either feeling tight or loose tends to just be the bearings being shit, good, or shit again. What did you use to grease them up?My bike make an almost sorta clicking/knocking noise every pedal stroke that turned out to just be my ACS Claw freewheel being shit and open bearing. Solved that one by getting my Eno back on...

Just used some grease to tighten them.. *Castrol LM Grease* And yea its an ACS Claw :$ Cant really afford an eno at the moment EDIT:// New bb?? Mark W
I really wouldn't run the BB hand-tight. Like I said, the tightness of the cups shouldn't affect the BB that much, unless it's open bearing or something. 'cos it's a sealed unit, the bearings will do preeeeeeeeetty much what the bearings want. Therefore, the looser your cups are the more chance there is of creaking or anything 'cos they'll have more play between the cups and the BB shell.Did you remember to put a spot of grease inside the left-side cup as well? My FSA ISIS BB occassionally clicked like a King until I put some in there...Could always go for a Tensile if you can't afford the Eno I guess, but to be honest, that may not solve your problem... Jason
yea the whole lots is greased up merrily. When you said about streching the tapers, did you mean the threads? because I'd sooner buy a new bb than a new freewheel
Mark W
Nah, sorry, I meant the tapers inside your crank arm. The crank arm material is softer than the BB spindle, so when you get the hammer down and tighten it up savagely, the crank arm tapers expand to cope with being forced on further. Therefore, they sit further in on the spindle. This kinda means you need a new crank arm though

I've literally just got these cranks
Mark W
The Dictas aren't really worth using. The Tensile is just as thin, but a hell of a lot better, basically.
Ash-Kennard
I had this on my control for months, I also thought my forks were cracked, but it turned out my headset was knackered. change that and see if it makes a difference

I don't wanna fork out for that if it doesn't fix it
