Littleharrys
Thats a load of rubbish, You can get it from travis perkins but you neeed to go to there industrial not commercial store, cos thats were I got mine. I just asked for roofing tar and they knocked off a block about the size of 2 tennis balls and let me have it for free. It is made from oil, I don't know the exact process etc, but its refined oil to make it a solid form. But look up oil and tar, see what you find. PaRtZ
"Tar is a form of bitumen. Bitumen comes from crude oil which through a clever process of fractional distillation, produces the aforementioned hydro-carbon" Gev 2005 Its easiest to get it from road people to be honest. I asked for tar once from a shop and then put a tin (of paint) of tar infront of me. It looks alot like coal (which is also made from carbon)

James@swanseatrials.com
The council were taring thr roads near us and left a mound of tar at the side of the road all warm so we left it dry a bit till it was still shiny but cool and rolled it up in a plastic bag. It wasn't the hard stuff it was the stuff they put between the hard stuff in the road that joins them together the darker stuff.
Simpson
If you want to get technical, bitumen is the substance achived in the fractional distillation tower when seperating crude oil my manipulating the compounds separate boiling points, this subsance will still need refining to make it into a more useable substance such as tar or plastic
N.Wood
Tar is also naturally occouring, found in the La Brea Tar pits of Los Angeles - one of the resons LA is so rich, it has natural oil deposits. Oil was made in the Carboniferous period, where England had a tropical climate, and is made from ancient plant and animal matter. Tar is anti-septic (Sailors used to slap bitumin on wounds to stop them from going septic...Bitumin was used to keep the ships water tight) and this anti-septic property has meant exceptional preservation of fossils found in the tar occours (other types of exceptional preservation include Amber and Burgess shale). Thought i might as well add some little facts as we all seem to be going on tangents  Anyways... Bitumin is pretty much worthless compared to oil, and is a plentiful commodity, so asking a roofer shouldn't be a problem.
